I was a young mom when I had my son. I was 16 years old. Everyone was so negative with me, never had nothing positive to say about me. I dropped out of school and started working. I didn’t have a real job but it was a little something for me to do. I helped my neighbors or close friends; like maybe clean the house and received a little cash from them. I was caught in struggling a little throughout life. I was constantly trying to show people that I could do it and raise my son without anybody’s help. I had my baby father around until my son was one years old. Then after that he was gone. I moved out as well. I moved in with a friend of mine. I told myself If kept going when everyone was talking about me while I was pregnant, then why should I stop now. I decided to raise my son on my own. I started believing that I wasn’t going to survive on my own, that I was going to fall down sooner or later. I was like in a cave. I struggled a little more on my own. There was a time when I was just thinking that maybe people was right, maybe I cannot do it on my own. At the same time, I didn’t want any help from nobody just because everyone was putting me down and being so negative. I had a friend of mine that moved in town and she helped me with my son, while I went to work. Then I finally got to put my son to school and started working some more. I saved out some money and rented a little place, just for me and my son. I escaped from the cave or the hole I was in. I have my own little place and raising my son on own. I could say I’m free and taking it a little further day by day. Now I could say if I did it on my own, anyone could do it as well. I’m still working and raising my son, while I’m currently enrolled in school. I want a better future to keep being there for my son and make sure I could give him what he needs. Things is not that easy but I could say I proved people wrong and dug myself out of the cave, now I don’t need to hear nothing else from nobody else. I am happy to be a single parent and I tell people all the times, “Don’t ever give up because there is always a time where we have to struggle sometime but sooner or later things are going to get better”. Keeping my head up and just listening to all the negative things people was saying, that’s what kept me going on. I heard everything and I just wanted to prove people wrong. Us being young, we do a lot of mistakes but people have to give you an opportunity so you could prove to them that you are not going to do the same mistake twice. I did it and now I’m doing well; and before you know it I’ll be doing better after I graduate with a career.

Now that I am enrolled in Professor Smith ENG099 class, I am hoping to learn and improve my writing skills. Starting this semester with Professor Smith has been good. I’ve noticed that when I have any questions or need any help with anything, he is there to help me and the others out. He is positive minded and constantly tries to keep us focus. At times, I know we need to do our behalf to be able to succeed, but it is hard when you work full time and go to school full time right after you get out of work. You feel like everything is pilling in your shoulders. I do catch myself at times studying in the train and bus while I’m on my way to school.
I am going to be honest with you. This is not an easy class for me because my writing skills are not so good. I often do have problems with my writing. I could speak English, maybe not perfectly but I could say is well enough. When it comes to writing I always have difficulties.
I think I do well with my introduction and when I give examples of my own when I'm writing my essay. There are a few things I believe I need improvement on. My main thing is with my punctuation marks. I am able to write the sentences but my problem is that at times I don’t know exactly where to place my comma, semicolon, etc. I tend to put a period everywhere and simply just start a new sentence every time. After revising my work I end up putting commas where they belong at. Second thing, I believe I also need improvement with is with my verb tense. When I write my summary or essay I at times mix present with past tense verbs. Sentences might sound correct to me but they might actually be incorrect. I believe I mix my verb tense a lot because I do not read or write a lot. I know I definite need improvement with that.
At times, I do have problems writing an essay of four hundred words. With the CAT-W practice test I think I did okay. I had a topic that was a little bit difficult for me to write about but I did write about something. I do know that I did not achieve a goal of writing a four hundred word essay. I believe that for me to pass this class I need to know my verb tense. That’s why I’m trying to stay focus to be able to pass this class this semester and also to get better writing skills.

In the passage "The Allegory of the Cave", by Plato talks about how prisoners that has been in a prison underground cave for many years live and how will they to react and see things after they get release. While being in prison they do not get to see nothing. Prisoners were chained facing the wall. The only things they was able to see was the shadow of everyone walking and passing by. The only reason they was able to see the shadows was because a fire was placed behind them, around where the path where everyone walked across, so that was what was creatin g the shadows in the walls. The prisoners were able to hear people speak but not clearly, they heared mumbeling going on.
Once the prisoners were released to the outside world, they saw everything different because it wasn't nothing that they was expecting to be or see. While being outside, the sun bothered them. The reason the sun was bothering their eyes so much was because they was in prison in the dark for so many years that when they finally saw light, the light was so strong and bright that it wasnt blinding them, not allowing them to see. When the prisoners saw everything clear outside, they ran back to the cave to tell the other prisoners about what they saw but it was impossible. The prisoners simply thought it was the same old routine, someone walking by and hear someone mumbling something to someone else.

In the passage "Hype", by Kalle Lasn talks about how our brains are filled daily with so much toxic of the mental pollutants. In other words the author is trying to say that we see many advertisement daily that it floods our brains. It floods our brains so rapidly at almost a rate of about three thousand logos or product messages per day. Kalle is trying to tell us that we cannot even have a piece of silence any more. I could agree with the author that there is many logos and messages posted everywhere we look and everything we look at.
I could relate with the author when she say that our brains is constantly being flooded as soon as our alarm goes off every morning. Everywhere we look we see something being advertised. I could relate to this, I wake up every morning at three o' clock to get ready for work. I have one hour to get ready and walk out the house. In that one hour I use to just get ready I see a lot of things. As soon as my alarm goes off and my eyes are open that is when we start seeing logos and others advertisement going on. There is just a few things I see just in the little bit of time I use in the morning at my house. I soon as I wake up I hear the alarm go off and face the clock to look at the time. I turn on the morning news and see many commercial advertisements going on. I see many news information being posted to alert us on what is going on around the world. We see more when we are in the bathroom, logos that are tagged in our jeans and the items we are going to grab to prepare our breakfast. In just that one hour I use to just prepare myself I seen a lot more then what I think. That's why I do believe when the author say that our brains is constantly being flooded at the rate of about three thousand messages per day.
Another example I could connect with to this is when we drive across a country side that has a nice view and then all of a sudden is being disturbed by an enormous billboard. In addition, we walk down a block, we see a Verizon and T mobile department store. While walking across the Verizon store, we see an ad saying that they have the best phone service compared to other company. In the other hand, when we walk by the T mobile store, I noticed they are advertising an ad saying they have the best phone deals around.
Everything our eyes could look at, we are being advertised by something in every corner we see. It starts from early morning when we wake up, as soon as our alarm clock goes off, then it follow throughout the day when we go outside until late at night, when we go to bed.

In the passage “Hype”, by Kalle Lasn talks about how our brains is constantly being flooded and filled everyday with so much contamination with logos or products messages as soon as we open our eyes early in the morning. Every direction our eyes looks we see something; is either a logo or product name or message. Our brains can never get no rest with having a post interrupt our view, unless we see a blank wall with no distraction around it. We was able to relax by just listening to the music but now even the music gets disturbed by commercials.

One think I got from thinking about annotations with the class is that the when we reading a passage we should read it right through the first time, then re-read it over a second time with writing notes on the side of the passage so we could get a little more understanding about what we are reading.
The thing I got from writing annotations for "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" is that when we use the Google/ Internet access we are getting distracted. While we are distracted we remember less and learn less. Google lets us find lots of information quickly but it doesn't give us the ability to think. When we think deeply that makes us intelligent, intelligence doesn't come from researching things quicker.
The thing I learned about annotating is that when we underline and write notes in the side of our passage we are getting more of an understanding about what they are trying to tell us.
Annotating makes us a better a writer because we learn more of what the passage is trying to tell us. We are highlighting only the basic or most important information of the passage.
